SPOTLIGHT: Nash Grier

Next one up is King of Vine Nash Grier, the most followed Viner at the moment; America’s blue-eyed baby producing all kinds of crazy.

Nash currently has over 9.5 million followers on Vine but despite his popularity (particularly with younger girls) he has caused quite a bit of controversy. A quick google search of the words “why does everyone hate…” reveals that people often query what it is about Nash Grier that causes the mixed public reception of him.

One of Nash’s most controversial acts was this Vine (which he soon after deleted) that brings forth notions of homophobia.

Although he apologised for it, evidence of his homophobia is seen throughout his Twitter page.

YouTuber Tyler Oakley, summarised in 140 characters why this Vine by Nash was so detrimental. As a high profile Viner he is very influential and what he says can affect how others act and understand information.

Nash’s influence is also seen in his controversial YouTube video, “What guys look for in girls” where Nash and two others talk about what they want in a girl aka their main social media following. According to them, they need hairless, petite and natural women (contradictory no? Natural but hairless?!)

Again, another YouTuber, Hank Green noted the detrimental effects that video’s like this have on Grier’s audience.

Nash’s Vine following transcended beyond the 6 second video app and has launched his career on YouTube. At the time he posted the video he had 300,000 subscribers (Dec 2013)… now over 3,500,000 (Sept 2014).

If that doesn’t explain why “everyone hates Nash Grier” it may also be on account of his…

racism…

…or the fact that he uses his little sister for content and engagement.

Nash’s most liked Vine sees his sister reciting lyrics wrong which seems innocent enough.

But he has posted more inappropriate videos with her, like this one where she pretends to ‘turn up’ aka get crunk aka everything that is inappropriate for a four year old to do.

If Nash is to stay in the spotlight, he really needs to learn how to use his influence better.

Always think before you Vine. Think about your audience. Think about your content.

    1. Hey Tory, we understand that it is hard to find our site on Google but this is because of the high concentration of Vine related webpages available to the public. We believe that we don’t need hi PR contextual backlinks, rather we believe that our content and social media will boost our readership and, in turn our following!

Thanks – M. Don’t do it for the Vine
